Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest by Chuck Black, tells the story of a stable boy turned famous tournament knight. After his quick rise to stardom, the Rowan is captured and put up for ransom, which no one pays. Rowan is starved and left for dead until a young widow comes and finds him on the brink of death. She nurses him back to health and helps him see the folly of his attention-seeking ways. Rowan finally vows to fulfill his purpose by serving the Prince and not himself. He hides with the rogue protesters of the evil ways of the Dark Knight called the Resolute, where he meets a stranger who informs him of the way to fulfill his destiny. This is the sixth book in The Knights of Arrethtrae series.Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest has all the classic elements of a great story. There’s the underdog’s rise to fame, which we all love. There’s the hero who suffers, but is saved in the last moment by a beautiful woman. There’s a sweet love story without the infamous push-pull I’ve grown weary of over time. Then there’s the calling to do something great beyond what you expect yourself to be capable of. Couple that with maps, sheet music, discussion questions and sparse illustrations, and you’ve got the makings of a training manual for future fantasy fiction lovers.
